On the deck of ships sailing in the middle of the sea the metrological conditions are even worse than usual: the ocean waves hit without time to react, it seems to rain with more force and the sun is scorching. Both sailors and the workers on oil platforms have to overcome these conditions on daily bases. If this wasn’t enough, the machinery they use also has to overcome the adverse conditions, in addition of the highly corrosive sea environment.

LARS has become the key component to explore the seafloor.
Design to work for long periods under dire situations, these launch and recovery systems are able to adapt to the reduced space on a ship deck. The LARS systems can submerge a robot from the deck of the ship even up to 3000 meters under the sea.
This robot is controlled form a control panel which has to be place in spot where the operator can have good visibility. It is very important to have the latest electronic and mechanical technology available and the best workers who can handle it properly.
Red lion brand HMIs can endure the weather conditions: the solution for Inproafe
Inproafe, is an engineering company located in Fene (A Coruña, Spain) which provides industrial electric services and personalized products of high quality, was looking for a IP68 HMI of high contrast and with Siemens S7 type communication to build a LARS controller. In addition to these requirements, the HMI had to be able to handle the adverse situations previously mentioned.
After a long search and comparing different products, Red Lion, distributed by Garma Electrónica, was the company which meets the needs of Inproafe. After looking into the different HMIs Red Lion Outdoor Provides, they finally chose for a waterproof HMI, able to withstand the dire situations of the sea and with good visibility under direct sun light. Furthermore, the G3 series Red Lion HMI, which comes with integrated protocol conversion and support more than 300 different protocols, shines when it comes to how simple it is to program theme, their connectivity, the capabilities of their software and the sensibility of their HMI. The response time of the HMI is outstandingly fast, mostly because it displays all the different variables of the equipment which allows having full control of it. Some of these variables are: rpm, torque, wire shot, temperatures, the state of the hydraulic system, different alarms, etc…
The local panel where the HMI was build was used to put the robot from the storage position to 50 meters under the sea and vice versa. Once it is submerged, the robot is controlled from a PC located in the operator room. The control panel is located by the PC, so the operator can have a clear sight of it.

The installation of the control panel by Inproafe has reported various benefits to their LARS, from which are worth of being mentioned the less time which is consumed and the fact that it is able to be used under direct sun light. Not only this, but the new technology has also brought an improvement in the processes compared to other machines of similar characteristics and the previously mentioned fact that the workers can use it without any problem even under direct sunlight. This new panel makes working outside easier even under the harshest weather and makes the communications with the PLC Siemens S7-1200 possible.
